Standard & Poor's said Friday that the low natural gas prices will probably not the merit of the oil sector in general affect, as companies have kept relatively low debt compared with other sectors, and in many cases, high oil prices to compensate lost natural-gas sales.
In a press release, the credit-ratings firm said companies with proven reserves of oil and associated liquids, but also oil-field service companies are ready for a "strong operating performance," despite the slump in natural gas market. The situation is likely to continue for the remainder of 2012 and 2013, the agency said.
Until recently, natural gas prices were trading at ten year low below $ 2 per million British thermal units, a long way from their peak above $ 13/mmBtu in July 2008. The decrease was a result of both reduced demand amid the economic crisis and an unexpected abundance of supply triggered by the oil companies tapping shale formations in North America.
"High oil prices and relatively low debt leverage for the industry to help these producers to maintain their creditworthiness," said Standard & Poor's credit analyst Thomas Watters said in a statement.
But S & P added that some companies have failed in the past year, as their natural-gas-oriented portfolios would not be able to keep pace with their obligations
